Obtaining a transgender name change in Nevada involves several steps, but the process is fairly straightforward.
Here’s a simple guide to help you:
1. Prepare the Required Documents
To begin the process, gather the following:
- A completed Petition for Change of Name (this is the formal request to change your name) you can find the form at Washoecourts.com.
- Fill out the form.
- You do not need a Notice.
2. File Your Petition
- Go to Washoecourts.com and sign up for free e-filing.
- File your petition and supporting documents in the District Court of the county where you reside.
- Pay the filing fee. If you cannot afford the fee, request a fee waiver by filing an application (find the form on Washoecourts.com).
3. Attend the Court Hearing
- After filing your petition, you may need to attend a hearing. The court will schedule this and notify you of the date and time, if one is set.
- Bring all relevant documents, and be prepared to explain why you are requesting the name change (e.g., affirming your gender identity).
- If the judge approves your petition, the Court will issue a Decree of Name Change.
4. Update Your Records
Once you receive the court order:
- Update your Social Security Card with the Social Security Administration.
- Update your driver’s license or ID with the Nevada DMV.
- Update your name on other official documents, such as your birth certificate, passport, and bank accounts.
- Changing your gendermarker on your birth certificate. Go to Office of Vital Records website, dpbh.nv.gov, for forms. Scroll down to “Corrections and Amendments” and download the “Corrections Packet”. This works for Nevada Birth Certificates only.
Special Considerations for Minors
If you are requesting a name change for a minor:
- Both parents or legal guardians typically need to agree and sign the petition.
- If one parent disagrees, the court will hold a hearing to determine if the name change is in the child’s best interest.
