Modernizing Adoption Law in Nevada: Kim Surratt Leads the Charge on AB 227
In a historic effort to modernize Nevada’s adoption laws, attorney Kim Surratt has spearheaded a comprehensive re-write of the state’s adoption law chapter—a long-overdue update that reflects the evolving needs of families and children.
The bill, AB 227, is the result of an extraordinary collaborative effort. Kim worked tirelessly alongside every Nevada Fellow of the Academy of Adoption and Assisted Reproduction Attorneys (AAAA), the private adoption agency in the state (a special thank you to Premier Adoptions for putting the extra effort in), as well as representatives from Washoe County and Clark County. This broad coalition of adoption professionals and legal experts ensured that the proposed legislation was thoughtfully crafted to serve the best interests of children, birth parents, and adoptive families alike.
A Strong Showing at the Nevada Legislature
This past week, AB 227 was heard before the Assembly Judiciary Committee, marking a significant step forward in its legislative journey. The bill received a favorable response from committee members, reflecting strong bipartisan support for its intended reforms. However, as the legislative process unfolds, there is active work being done to restore the bill to its original proposed language before it proceeds to a vote in the Assembly Judiciary Committee.
There is high optimism for the passage of AB 227, which would bring much-needed clarity, efficiency, and fairness to Nevada’s adoption laws. The proposed changes aim to streamline processes, improve protections, and better align the law with modern adoption procedures.
A Team Effort
Kim extends her deepest gratitude to Shelly Cooley and Eric Stovall for their instrumental roles in drafting and advancing this critical legislation. Their expertise, dedication, and countless hours of work have been invaluable in moving AB 227 forward.
